Anesthesia and Patient Monitoring

Making sure our patients remain safe during surgery and other medical procedures is extremely important to us. Our team of veterinarians and veterinary technicians is skilled in using anesthesia and monitoring patients to ensure their safety and provide the most comfortable experience. Anesthesia and patient monitoring vary greatly from clinic to clinic. We choose to use non-barbiturate induction drugs and non-metabolised gaseous maintenance agents (the pet just breathes them out) in order to maximize patient comfort and safety. We also use multi-parameter anesthetic monitoring equipment which measure oxygen levels in the blood, carbon dioxide levels in the air the patient breathes out, blood pressure, respiration rate and electrocardiogram (ECG), in addition to having an Animal Health Technologist actively monitoring the patient. During patient recovery, supplementary oxygen is given after the breathing tube is removed, until the patient is fully conscious. The type of anesthesia we use depends on the procedure. Some require general anesthesia, while others may only call for local anesthesia. We also closely monitor every procedure, regardless of whether it’s routine or more advanced.
