What is a therapy laser?
We are excited to offer our patients laser therapy with the CompanionTherapy Laser. the most powerful class IV laser in the veterinary field. Our therapy laser produces a focused pulsedbeam of light which penetrates deep into living tissue where it reduces pain and inflammation by a complex phot-biochemical cascade. Class IV therapy lasers offer a huge benefit in the treatment of a wide variety of painful conditions in cats and dogs, for pain relief, age related disorders, accelerating wound healing and more.
What does that mean in real terms for my pet?
The therapy laser can improve quality of life for almost any condition which involves pain and discomfort. Some of the conditions that benefit from treatment withthe therapy laser would include:
- Post surgical pain
- Fractures and ligament injuries to reduce pain and accelerate healing.
- Abcesses
- Chronic and acute ear infections (including aural hematoma)
- Skin Irritation and infections (including hotspots and lick granulomas)
- Arthritic pain (including hip dysplasia)
We use laser therapy to reduce post surgical pain in all our surgical patients and recommend its use in rehabilitation therapy for all our orthopedic patients. Laser therapy can also be used in a wide variety of other conditions from bite wounds to fractures to reduce pain and speed healing. When used for chronic conditions like arthritis laser therapy can increase mobility and reduce reliance on prescription drugs. This can be particularly important in cats where the options for long term pain control are limited.
What is involved and how do we get started?
Laser therapy is non-invasive, does not require sedation nad can be carried out as a simple outptient procedure. A Doctor assesses the patient and draws up a primary treatment plan. In the case of an ear infection this may be as few as three or four treatments over a week to ten days. For a patient with chronic pain from arthritis the primary treatment course may be 6 to 10 treatments over a 3 to 3 week period.
Each treatment may takeanywhere from 5 to 30 minutes depending on the condition being treated and the level of pain or injury. With some chronic conditions such as hip dysplasia or other arthritic conditions treatment may be ongoing, with patients visiting monthly for maintenance treatment after successful induction therapy has been completed.
